History of Snowmass Village, Colorado

Snowmass Village, Colorado, in Pitkin County is considered part of the popular Aspen Community. Located in western Colorado, this area has a history much older than its resorts. It was inhabited by Ute Native Americans for centuries until it was surveyed and settled by white Americans in the 1870s. The Ute were pretty much banished by the 1880s, in order for the settlers to clear the land for ranching. The area's commerce would be dominated by cattle grazing, grain production, then logging. A large forest fire cleared one of the hills leaving what would become the first of many ski slopes. The area then grew into the world-class ski resort that it is known for today. While the permanent population according to the 2023 census was 1,822, Snowmass, Colorado, attracts millions of visitors from around the world. This pure mountain town takes pride in its towering friends - life takes place on and around the surrounding mountains. As locals enjoy their serenity in this peaceful village, they don't mind outsiders coming to enjoy it as well.
